| Natural gas (Biogas) is gaseous fossil fuel consisting primarily of methane but including significant quantities of ethane, butane, propane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, helium and hydrogen sulfide. Natural gas is found in oil fields, natural gas fields, and in coal beds. Sources of biogas (natural gas) include swamps, marshes, and landfills , as well as sewage sludge and manure. Cattle and other ruminants also produce significant quantities of biogas (methane). Before natural gas can be used as a fuel, it must undergo extensive processing to remove almost all materials other than methane. Natural gas can also be explosive. Natural gas is lighter than air, and so normally natural gas tends to dissipate into the atmosphere. But when natural gas is confined, natural gas concentrations can reach explosive levels and result in natural gas explosions that can destroy buildings.
